The first ever plant grown on the moon is by China Chang’e 4 Moon Landers, it marks the first biological matter grown on the moon in history.
Though plants had been grown on international space station before but never has it happen on the moon. The successfully growing of plants on the moon will encourage long-term space mission, like trip to Mars which takes approximately two and half years. It means astronauts could harvest their own food while in space needing not to take a trip down to earth to get more food supply.
Chinese state media on Tuesday said the cotton seeds taken to the Moon is had now grown buds, also the image of the sprouted seeds was tweeted by the ruling Communist party’s official mouthpiece the People’s Daily saying, “it marked the completion of humankind’s first biological experiment on the Moon”.
Australian Astronomical Observatory’s astronomer-at-large, Fred Watson on BBC development said, “It suggests that there might not be insurmountable problems for astronauts in future trying to grow their own crops on the moon in a controlled environment”.
Watson also said, “I think there’s certainly a great deal of interest in using the Moon as staging post, particularly for flights to Mars, because it’s relatively near the Earth”.
Prof Xie Gengxin, the experiment’s chief designer during South China Morning Post said they’ve given consideration to future survival in space.
“Learning about these plants’ growth in a low-gravity environment would allow us to lay the foundation for our future establishment of space base”, said Gengxin.
He said, “cotton could eventually be used for clothing while the potatoes could be a food source for astronauts and the rapeseed for oil”
