In 2011, the Executive Governor of the State of Osun in person of Ogbeni Abdulrauf Adesoji Aregbesola changed the name of the state from ‘Osun State to State of Osun’ due to reasons well known to him.
It was well received by the supporters of the Governor in the state as it allegedly serve as the hall mark of change. But reverse is the case for the NBA, Ilesha branch Chairman Mr Kanmi Ajibola who’s also a human right activist, dragging the administration to court of law in 2016 and asking the court to declare the naming and transactions made with the name null and void as
it’s against the constitution.
‘The plaintiff had sought an order setting aside the “State of Osun Land Use Charge Law, 2016,” having been enacted by the legislative body that is not known to the Constitution and for the state not known to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). It is not enforceable in Osun State’
Justice Afolabi threw out all the arguments by the State Attorney-General, Dr Basiru Ajibola who was the counsel for the governor and the state government and that of the director of legal services, Mrs Racheal Ojinni
Thereby declaring the name Illegal on December, 13th 2017.
Dr Basiru, has stated that the state government is going to appeal the verdict at Court of Appeal.
